Far be it from me to tell you how to look at any of this, Nahida, but it seems to me that every Palestinian child born after 1948 is reason to celebrate and one born on the 9th of April, much more so. Your son is a symbol of Palestinian endurance....

Nahida, I love this poem. You have one date, April 9th, that date means joy and sadness. You feel joy when you look at your child, yet sadness when you remember the date. You know, years ago I worked in a hospital, the cancer ward. Although you tr...

Physically:

Normal looking
Sub-normally looked at
Abnormally dealt with
Joyfully sad eyes
Head inflamed with grey hair
Petite for my age
Giant with my pain

I would say
A beautiful beast
Or an ugly butterfly

Emotionally:

Extremely sensitive
Yet incredibly thick-skinned
I feel so much for all others
While "some-others" deny my own existence
Spectrum of two extremes of intense emotions
Fluctuating between
Unwavering hope and utter despair

I would say
A strong wimp
Or a spineless hero

Intellectually:

Above average
Below-humanly perceived
Viewed as a mentally suppressed creature
Trying to solve the world’s problems
While failing to figure out my own
Sharp with a great deal of naivety
Simple with much complexity

I would say
A stupid genius
Or a gifted fool

Spiritually:

Faith is my lone reason for being
My fountain of hope
Overflowing with love, and joy
Yet for some I am the source of evil
And manifestation terror
Sporadically vibrating with the yoyo of my deeds
Between intimate nearness and lonesome isolation

I would say
A mild extremist
A hostile angel
A tender terrorist
A mischievous child

Wouldn’t you agree?

My first son Hassan
Was born on April the 9th

You might think
So what… why are you saying it
With such a gloomy tune
What is wrong with 9th of April?

You have to be a Palestinian
To understand
For on the 9th of April 1948
The massacre of Deir Yassin
Took place
Where every man women and child
Of that peaceful farming village
Was killed in cold blood
No one survived
Except those
Who pretended to be dead

As we celebrate the birth of a new born
With joy
We mourn and gri… Continue

Nahida... you say too many nice things about me! (and a LOT of people say the exact opposite!) But, I am the person who is enriched on a daily basis by seeing the ways people like you act.

Like I've said elsewhere, I'm essentially a pessimist and very "angry", and I do try to divert it into something positive and useful, but my negativity often gets the driver's seat. Then, I see people who are REALLY compassionate, and it makes me see how wrong I am and how much I've got to learn.

Watching you teaches me so much.

Anyway, this is the year (here comes a bit of positivity) that I think Palestinians will rise and things will change. It is an important year, with an important anniversary. We all have to work harder than we ever have. I think together is the only way.

I'm going to upload your poetry now. It is so magnificent.

On a side note, this form of blog is really innovative and "user friendly". It feels like a community. Thanks again to Iqbal for creating it.

I have viewed your space Madam, I noticed that in most of these photos you have the Palestinian dress. Though I live in Palestine, now in UAE for work, this is the first time I see some one who is still proud of Palestinian costume. Any way, Thanks for being Palestinian.

See you in Palestine soon,

Salam Nahid,
Thanks for your persuasive and enthusiastic reply. I am not shocked about the news of stolen Palestinian culture, though it is some thing we should all defend. I need your help Nahid regarding this issue. I am a journalist, also studying journalism, as you might notice. I wish to know more about this subject: the dispute over Palestinian culture, customs and tradition. That could be a very good TV report proposal. Thanks in advance.
By the way, when I see this Palestinian "Thoub" (Dress) Ifeel the tree trunks, I smell the soil, I hear the farmers' voices, I taste the "Zaatar" pies and I see Palestine proud of people like those who are in love of it.

See you soon in Palestine,
